Current Members of the Honors Council
Mathew Carrick, President
Hi, I'm Mathew Carrick! I'm currently a Junior with a Mathematics major and an Economics minor, and I'm very excited to be serving on the Honors Student Advisory Council! Outside of the Council, I am an ASUAF Senator, Student Ambassador, New Student Orientation Leader, an actively participating member in the Model UN, and co-host of the radio show Starship Fairbanks. My interests include history, politics, math, the German language, baking, and chickens. You can usually find me at the Honors House, where I'll always be willing to talk about ways to improve the Honors Program and general community -- or just hang out!
Ashley Strauch, Vice President
My name is Ashley Strauch. This year I am a senior at UAF finishing up my degree in Psychology and minor in Secondary Education. I have been active on the council for two years now, and last year served as a student representative. This past year I completed my senior thesis and Honors capstone project titled "Perceptions of Alcohol Use Among Alaskan College Students." I believe the Honors program has provided me with a plethora of academic, social, and professional opportunities and I would like to do more to be involved with these activities. In addition to the council, this will be my third year as an orientation leader, my third year as the President of Psi Chi, my third year working as a research assistant for the Center for Alaska Native Health Research, my second year as a senator in ASUAF, and my first year as a UAF Student Ambassador. I am a very busy individual but I am often around the house and am a knowledgeable source for information about the program as well as UAF. Feel free to come talk to me anytime!
Stacey Krepel, Secretary
Hey, I'm Stacey Krepel, your HSAC Secretary! I'm currently a junior majoring in biochemistry, and I've been involved with the Honors Student Council since my Freshman year at UAF. I love being involved on campus, which is why I am always busy with something, whether that is intramural volleyball, the Honors Program, Circle K, Orientation, or Golden Key. I am also one of the three SI tutors for the Chemistry department, so if you have Chemistry questions, come visit me! I am super excited for the upcoming school year, and I hope you all are too! We have some big plans for HSAC this semester, and I can't wait to get started!
Celie Hull, Treasurer
Hi I'm Celie Hull! I'm a sophomore Petroleum Engineering student from Palmer, and this is my first year serving on the Honors Council. I love UAF, the Honors Program, and all of the wonderful people here. Some of my other favorite things are hiking, knitting, skiing, rocks, baking and How I Met Your Mother reruns. I love being busy, so please let me know if there is anything I can do to help improve the Honors Program!
Lindsey Klueber, Historian
Hi! My name is Lindsey Klueber! I am a full-time art and biology student, and have been in the Honors Program for a little over a year. I am currently pursuing a double degree program of a BS in Biology and a BA in Art (with undeclared minors of Marine Biology and Communications). My dream as an artist is to unite science and design to create a means to inspire the public about conservation, as well as get people to become more scientifically literate. Outside of my major interests, I have a thorough appreciation of the humanities (philosophy, history, and literature); various athletics (cross country skiing and running, soccer, and Ultimate Frisbee to name a few); photography; and Humans vs. Zombies. I am also a hard core nerd. As HSAC historian, I hope to share the exciting shenanigans and community service adventures of Honors students with the rest of the Honors community and Fairbanks university.
Koty Emery, Student Representative
Hello! I’m Koty Emery! I’m a sophomore who is trying to obtain a B.S. in Biochemistry with a minor in Justice. One day I hope to become a forensic scientist working for the Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory in Anchorage. I’ve been in the Honors Program for a little over a year, and this is my first time on the council. I enjoy being involved with the campus and community, and as such, I am involved with S.O.L.D. (Students Offering leadership Development), the vice president of the NSCS (National Society of Collegiate Scholars) chapter here at UAF, and a member of the ACS (American Chemical Society) chapter. Outside of academics, I enjoy hiking, playing violin, spray painting, and playing video games. If you have any questions, need help, or suggestions to help improve the Honors Program, or just want to talk, I’m all ears!
Kayleen Hansen, Student Representative
Hello! I'm Kayleen Hansen, from Nikiski, Alaska. I'm a third year Biology student, with a focus on medicine, as well as a minor in Spanish. I'm currently involved in New Student Orientation, the Honors Program, Chordinated (the a capella group on campus), the Spanish Department, and work part time on campus as the Student Assistant to the Dean of Students. In the summer, I work for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game enumeration salmon smolt and sampling commercial sockeye catch. I love being involved in classes, extracurriculars, and volunteer work, as well as just spending time engaging in my hobbies, which include homework, cooking, and wondering where all my free time goes. The Honors Program has been an integral part of my time here at UAF. I hope that my involvement as a Student Representative helps to improve the ways the program serves its students and to continues to be a wonderful part of campus that future students can enjoy. As a transfer student from Willamette University, I believe I have unique insights as to how the Honors Program can improve and grow as part of campus. If anyone has suggestions, comments, questions, concerns, or just wants to chat, I encourage them to come talk to me. Here's looking at a wonderful year!
Jordyn Houlton, Student Representative
Greetings! My name is Jordyn Houlton and this is both my first year at UAF and my first year in the Honors Program. I am working towards a BS in Mechanical Engineering. My hobbies included the usual things like reading, writing, avidly watching TV shows and movies (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Batman...), and drawing and painting when I have time for it. Oh, and karate and music. My academic interests are divided between engineering and writing. Besides the Honors Council, I am also involved in Chordinated (an A Capella group on campus) and H.A.P.P.Y. (Happiness Association Promoting Positivity in Youth). Those are about all the fun facts I have for you, but if you want to know anything else or you have any suggestions for the Honors Program, please talk to me! I would love to be of assistance.
Emily Smola, Student Representative
Hey lovelies! My name is Emily Smola and I plan on graduating this May with a major in Psychology and minors in Elementary Education and Music (vocal performance). I have been in the Honors program since I transferred here from Lewis and Clark College back in Fall 2011. I have been on the Honors council every semester since Spring 2012 as a Student Representative and Historian with the exception of my trip abroad to Brighton, England for a term. As a Student Representative for Fall 2013, I plan on connecting with students both academically and extracurricularly. Some of the things I plan on doing this semester are: to create some fun events for the Honors students to enjoy; be a voice for the students to the program; to connect students with the multitude of resources available on campus; and to make friends! I am involved in a plethora of activities, as well. (Skip the following list if you're bored...) I am a Student Ambassador for the university; I work for the North Star School Borough as a Migrant Tutor for three teenage girls; I work as Distribution Manager for university's newspaper: the Sun Star; I am President of Chordinated, a student-lead a cappella group; I am part of volunteer organization, Circle K; I am a member of Gender and Sexualities Alliance; and I have a Little through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Obviously, I love being involved and learning new things daily! Some of my hobbies include trying to get better at packrafting, rock climbing, backpacking, and guitar. Also, as an avid traveler, my current career goal is to attain my teacher's licensure and then teach internationally. Although I frequently find new things about myself just as often as I meet new people, I enjoy every minute and every minute detail of my life and life in general. I love talking to new people and hanging out, so let's grab some tea (or coffee if you prefer) and have a chat!
